This Week: Create a Sacred Space for Your Creativity
My timing writing this morning’s post is incredibly ironic, as my own creative space is filled with boxes and files and items to be shipped. Rather than writing in my own designated creative space, I am sitting with my laptop at my kitchen table.
Even in times of transition, or when we’re on the road, or we’re otherwise not in control of our locations, it is still possible to create a sacred space for your creativity. Here are a few ways that I am practicing this tip this week:
- Surround yourself with inspiration. I am currently facing a window that looks out onto my garden and the trees behind my house. I love the view from this window. I can watch my dogs playing, or the birds migrating, and sometimes the occasionally water crane. Besides the view, I have my Moleskine notebook handy, as well as a few other creative resources that designate this place setting as my creative space for today.
- Create an atmosphere. When I’m need to be mobile with my creative space, the best way I have found to do this is either by choosing an interesting location (favorite coffeeshop, outdoor area, museum, et cetera) and by listening to music (via headphones) that gets my creative juices going. I have created a specific go-to playlist for occasions like these.
- Tune out the rest of the world. When I can’t close a physical office door, I have found that putting on my headphones has the same effect, especially in a public space. I’m focused on my work, and people tend not to bother me. My husband uses sound-cancelling headphones and swears by them.
How do you maintain or create a sacred space for your creative work? How do you adapt when you’re in transition? I’d love to hear your tips in the comments!

Yes to creating our own sacred space!! It’s also really important to set a container where we feel safe to explore our creativity. What inspires you to follow your passions? Everyone’s needs are unique and it’s good to follow your instincts when creating this space. I am a designer, artist and feng shui consultant.

Thank you for your comment, Marjory! A place where we feel safe to explore our creativity is so important, and I’m not sure I addressed that aspect. Thank you for bringing it into the conversation!
