This Week: Explore a New City

I’ve had the incredible opportunity to travel more this year than in years past, but sadly, to already familiar places. While the cities I’ve visited are fantastic, I know that I feel most energized creatively when I am exploring a new place, with unique pockets of culture and a completely different style than what I am used to.

5-Things-IconI’ve had a head full of ideas these last few days, from sewing projects (finally using my machine!) to a new series here to if and when and how to launch forums to foster creative community here on Creative Perch. Fall break is this week, and I have the urge to make things. Here are a few things that are inspiring me this week.

1. Where the Wild Things Are

Surprise, surprise, right? Chris and I saw the movie with two of our friends last night, and we all loved it. It definitely touched our hearts in ways we didn’t expect. I picked up a stack of Maurice Sendak’s other books at the library yesterday. Impressive! You can read more about Maurice here, but two things stand out to me. “Art is everywhere. It finds its origin in everything and ultimately reflects the beauty of the Creator.” – Chris Wilcox, Chris Paul Design, LLC

The-Fort-ProjectNot long ago Kelly Burgess hosted The Fort Project. She asked people to participate by creating a fort and filling it with things that were special, meaningful or valuable to them. Here’s her description of the project:

The fort project is a series of environmental portraits. I asked individuals to “construct a fort and fill it with what you love.” I referred to the structures as forts because I wanted people to begin thinking about concentrating their space and about self-containment, and forts are the first private spaces that most people create for themselves.

This Week: Experiment with Oops Paint

Oops paint is one of my favorite artistic mediums, but it is often overlooked. In case you’re unfamiliar with it, oops paint is simply paint that was mixed incorrectly or not according to a customer’s expectation, returned to the store, and sold at a steep discount. You can often find quart sizes for $3 and gallons for $5. I have an artist friend who repaints the rooms in her home frequently with just oops paint.
