This Week: See With New Eyes

Chris and I have had the opportunity to bring a fresh creative energy to our clients on many occasions simply because we have new eyes in the situation. We’re not deeply entrenched in any one industry, which allows us to see things from a different perspective than those who work with the same people and do the same work day after day.

The same applies with creative work. Sometimes, it’s best to use the tools or venues or sources that you are most familiar with and work best for you. Other times, it pays to put the effort in and try something new.

However, when you don’t have time to learn a new technique or master a new software program, try looking at things with new eyes.

There are a couple of ways to do this. For example, if you are a photographer looking for a new venue, try walking through familiar neighborhoods rather than driving through them, or just slowing down on your way from one place to another. If you slow the process down, chances are you’ll see something you didn’t notice before.

If you’re revising a set of text or code or music you’ve been working on for weeks, try using a note card to cover up portions of text and read it line by line rather than as a cohesive text. Looking at things “out of context” can help you notice new opportunities.

If you find your design work following a trend of the same colors or patterns, scale back to a smaller palette. Reducing the number of available options simplifies the creative process and can help you draw out the essence of the work.
