Get Your Creative Groove On. Week 25: Listen to the Music

creativegroove_iconHow to Get Your Creative Groove On is an original series by Perch. This week learn how music can help you tap your creativity and get your creative groove on.

Week 25: Listen to the Music

Today the world observed and participated in the celebratory and music-packed memorial service for Michael Jackson. He was described as a rising stare, a beautiful light, come from the Creator and trailing creativity after him.

The poem by Maya Angelou and read by Queen Latifah was very moving, and the music that filled the ceremony made me think of all of the many incredible works of music and entertainment that celebrate creativity in a way other arts and industries do not.

So I Googled. There must be a connection between creativity and music. I know that I work best and fastest and almost always feel at my creative best when I have the right music playing. I have witnessed many creative friends working late at night to dance music, jazz, and even dramatic movie soundtracks.

752454_62123980Turns out I’m not the only one who is curious. HOW Magazine recently posted an article sharing medical research that demonstrates the connection:

Dr. Jeffrey Thompson of The Center for Neuroacoustic Research in San Diego has examined the impact of sound on creativity since 1980. He’s both a musician and an expert on brainwave frequencies. “The brain looks different if you’re trying to solve a creative problem than if you’re trying to solve a math problem,” Thompson explains.

So when you turn on the CD player, Thompson says the brainwaves attempt to time themselves to the speed of the pulses in the music. “That alters your consciousness, creating a more dreamlike state,” he says. “That dreamlike state, Theta, mirrors the state of consciousness associated with creativity.”

HOW also interviewed several designers about there music tastes and how music affects them creatively. Read that interview here.
