This Week: Read for Inspiration
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I wake up feeling like I don’t have a single creative bone in my body. This is especially true on Mondays. I go through the motions of making coffee, throwing a bagel in the oven, letting the dogs out, letting them back in, feeding them… And then, eventually, finally, I slump into my chair in front of my computer, hoping inspiration will hit.
I have to admit, the coffee helps.
First I open up my Mac Mail app and TweetDeck. The constant conversation on Twitter really helps wake up my brain a bit. I follow a little over 400 people from all over the world, all in different time zones, so it’s easy to jump into active conversations, no matter what time of day I log on. Then I flip over to the RSS feed reader in Mac Mail and scan through the sixty or so blog feeds to which I subscribe. I’ve mentioned earlier that I have a few favorites that are particularly inspirational for a morning creative fix, but I’m always discovering new blogs to love.
For me, this is the equivalent of flipping through the newspaper in days gone past. I’m still a print media fiend (I know digital is eminent, but I’m old school that way), so I keep local print magazines, my favorite magazine subscriptions, and a few creative books constantly on hand.
Currently I have 4,599 unread items in my feed reader. Do I really think I’ll get to all of these? Probably not, but maybe. But by even making the attempt, by even trying to keep a tap on the constant buzz of creativity moving around the world, Twitter and the blogosphere help me stay sharp, start the day off strong, and keep my creative edge.
