This Week: Try Instant

As a digital artist, I cannot express to you how thankful I am for Ctrl+Z (or Apple+Z :) ). The layering options and history palette in Photoshop make my life infinitely easier and more productive.

However, there is something to be said for traditional mediums of art. Even when working with the most “realistic” tools in the world, painting digitally and painting on canvas are very, very different. When working with pencil and sketchpad, oil and canvas, or real film instead of digital, there is a patience that is learned, and an adaptability to imperfection that doesn’t exist in the digital world.

Instant Art

One of the best ways to break out of the digital box is to try instant art. When you’re working with an “instant” art medium, you can’t Ctrl+Z your way back. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Instant film. Polaroid cameras still abound, and there is a movement to get film back into production. Fuji recently released its own instant film camera, and the PoGo project allows camera phones to plug into a pocket-sized instant film printer. Instant film is the epitome of the “candid photo” and has taught me more about light and placement than the every-so-easy digital point-and-shoot.
  • Speed-painting. Speedpainting is a great way to get your creative juices flowing. Trying new shapes and colors can open your mind up to other applications. Increase the challenge with fast-drying acrylics.
  • Tie-Dye. Yes, you read that right. :) Haven’t you heard, tie-dye is the latest, greatest thing? Seriously, though, you can’t get much more instant (or more random, or more colorful) than tie-dye. Try fabric dye on an old T-shirt, or even food coloring on coffee filters.
