Giveaway: Serious Drawings

3534349396_f9366304bd_mLast week I mentioned the happy news that I have an extra new-in-plastic copy of Serious Drawings by Marc Johns to give away to one reader of Creative Perch.

There are so many ways to conduct a giveaway. I think I’ve re-written the rules for this one about three different times. Instead of sending out a special code via Twitter, or picking the third commenter, I decided to keep it simple.

Even though Marc has been publishing his work on Flickr for several years, I’m a recent fan, and I’m convinced more people need to hear about him. Therefore, here are the contest rules:

  1. Visit Marc’s Flickr photostream.
  2. Choose which one of Marc’s illustrations is your favorite.
  3. Tell us why you chose it and post a link to the image in the comments. (If you need help with this, email me at dee at creativeperch dot com).
  4. Then, on Friday morning, I will select one commenter at random to receive the book. I’ll send the winner an email as well as announce it here.
  5. When the winner emails me back with his or her mailing address, I’ll ship the book.

A couple of notes, because although it may be obvious, this is my first giveaway, and I just want to be sure:

  • Let’s be fair. If there are a lot of commenters, I’ll use Random.org for the drawing. If there are under 10, I’ll put your numbers in a bowl and have my husband pick one.
  • To the winner – Please do not post your physical address in the comments. That’s just not safe.
  • I will not share your email address, physical address, or any other contact info with anyone, ever. Because that’s just wrong.

Read my review of Marc’s book here, or check out his website to hear more from him about this project.

Good luck! And have fun exploring! I think you’ll really enjoy Marc’s illustrations.

Just because it’s such a hilariously Marc Johns take on a commonplace expression. Very witty, perfect for someone with a dry, sarcastic sense of humor. This image perfectly exemplifies the reason I love March Johns, simplistic yet expressive, and of course always leaving me laughing.

I love finding things people have left for me and vise-versa. They never know what your expression will be, but all hope it will make someone smile.

My favorite is definitely “You stole my thunder, but I stole your lightning.” It made me literally laugh out loud and the entire office turned to stare.

always like the idea of comics that break the 4th wall

I love this one because it reminds me of what it’s like when you have an unfinished idea – it begs you to be finished, but sometimes, the inspiration and energy just aren’t there.

I think my favorite would have to be “Beard Bird.” It’s just so bizarre, and seems to embody a lot of Marc’s humor, which I find hilarious.

I will never tire of “Beard Bird” (http://www.flickr.com/photos/marcjohns/3098599500/). The pure awesomeness of a bird with a beard (let alone mostly made of a beard) is something I would like to see more often.

O, there were a fair few I could have chosen, but this one made me laugh out loud, so there you go…

True story: I discovered Marc Johns via my love for hillarious moustaches. Thus, my favorite is this one:

Plus it rhymes so you know it’s good.

I too am a recent fan! I discovered him just yesterday actually and searched the nearest bookstores to find out that they’re all out of stock of the book. :(

It’s just so so so hard to pick a favorite when my smile widens artwork after artwork.

I’m fond of this one though:

It’s simple, smart, and witty, all qualities possessed by Mr. Marc Johns. He is genius, and upon stumbling across this drawing, I wished that I could have been the one to have thought of it! Plus, I have a slight adoration for cupcakes and baked goods.

The more I explore Marc’s Flickr stream, the more impressed I am. I could literally spend hours browsing through his illustrations. The comments on each image in his Flickr stream are also insightful – Marc’s artwork is universal in many ways, and each illustration seems to mean something different to each individual.

I love the expression “mad freakin´ beats” …don´t know what´s the actual spanish translation

I love the “compliments while you’re on hold” one. Somebody should really do that. http://m.flickr.com/#/photos/marcjohns/3360739296/sizes/m/

my favorite one is ‘bowl of batter, what’s the matter’… it makes me laugh and the illustration is great, especially the colors. i’d love to have one in my kitchen. i’m such a baker :)

the lightning one was great! I also love the mustaches on strings (they are the finest of things.) :-)

This was the first drawing I saw from Marc and this drawing left an imprint in my mind , He made powerful drawings ,intelligant, fresh , clean , funny and inspiring.

I like this one, too. It says something about the invisible costumes we wear, makes me want to take my “monster costume” off and just be me.

Have you read the comments on the Flickr page for this one? Insightful.

Just discovered Marc after reading your posts, and spent some very pleasant time going through the images. My favourite is “compliments instead of drab music when you’re on hold”

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/marcjohns/3360739296/

I would prefer to stay on hold if companies implemented this.

I love “jim tries harder.” It’s the perfect example of how Marc can take a simple concept and create sometime beautiful and clever that makes you smile and think. he can say so much with so little, quite a talent.

This one reminds me of corporate America – of Cubicle Land and its army of office workers. When I lived in that world, I felt very much like Jim in this illustration.

So simple, but it’s the wit that makes it such a winner. Hm, I think the drawing may also apply to some politician’s minds. You know.

I like this one because this is kind of how I felt in college…I’d finish one project and instead of being glad to have completed it I’d just have to start working on the next one, no matter how exhausted I was from the last one. Like, oh well, let’s tape it back on and get going.

I also think it’s a pretty clever illustration of the American health-care system for those of us without insurance. :)

It’s very true – we try so much to band-aid (or scotch tape) really big problems. Notice the character is by himself, too – lots of the comments questioned how he would manage to tape himself up. Sometimes, we need better solutions, and we need people to help us.

my favorite is “log-chainsaw”… it’s just silly, but at the same time so on point! haha!

I picked my favourite the other day but waited until now before sharing — just to make sure it still was #1 on my list because I love all of Marc’s drawings.

Yes, I love the sweet incongruity of the glum faces claiming “we enjoy dressing up as birds” http://www.flickr.com/photos/marcjohns/435193111/in/set-72157600797388598/.
