This Week: Sketch the Vision
When you’re trying to form or communicate an idea, sometimes words just won’t do. While we’ve all experienced this tongue-tied dilemma when we’re trying to frame an idea with words, the reason for the struggle was probably illusive. The problem lies in relying on the wrong side of the brain.
Right Brain vs. Left Brain
Right-brained thinking is a visual, whereas the left brain is the seat of language. When we try to use words to frame an idea, it may be that we’re tapping into the left side of the brain, where logic and reason frame our processes. This may actually inhibit creative thinking.
When words fail, try thinking from the right side of the brain. Grab a pencil and a sketch pad, and use symbols and images to frame your idea instead. Color helps, too. You can highlight or use a color key to clarify aspects of your idea.
Sketching your idea out visually can help you see the framework of your idea and interconnected relationships more clearly. You can even take this tip one step further by combining visual symbols with words through mind-mapping. Whether you use tactile or digital tools, sketching the vision can help you tap into your creative thought process more effectively than relying on words alone.
