This Week: Connect with a Maven

When it comes to learning, creativity, and innovation, there is nothing more powerful than community. Several months ago I wrote about Connectors, Mavens, and Salesmen. Developing relationships in the community with all three types of individuals is beneficial, but this week’s tip will focus on how connecting with a Maven can help you take your creative ideas to the next level.

The Power of Knowledge and Expertise

If you’re like me, coming up with a creative idea is not difficult. It’s the implementation of the idea that’s challenging. I can see a beautiful piece of art in my mind, but when I try to recreate it materially, the end result and the image I saw in my mind are rarely alike. I don’t know if it’s the medium I used, my particular skill set, or the tools that I have, but the final product simply isn’t what I expected or intended to create.

That’s where a relationship with a Maven comes in. Mavens make it their business to know everything there is to know about a particular topic. They know the past, present, and future trends in their niche; they know where it’s been and where it’s going. They know how things are done, and how to get things done. They know how to get exactly what you want, in the most efficient way possible, for the best price.

Finding a Maven

Mavens are passionate about their topic of expertise and often love to share what they know with others. Unfortunately, they often aren’t as extroverted as Connectors or Salesmen and can be a bit illusive to find.

The best way I have found to connect with a Maven is through social networks. Ask, who’s the expert? Try Google; search Twitter. Whose name continually pops up? When you find a Maven, get someone to introduce you, or contact them directly. Show respect for their knowledge, be humble about your lack of expertise, and you’ll likely see a great relationship develop.
