Week 15: Ask an Expert
The pursuit of greatness and excellence consumes many of our lives. In our youth we work hard to perfect our craft. The years of practice are well worth it, as research shows that we “peak” at 40. In fact, most of us have done our best creative work by age 45. From there, our productive lives move into “expert work.” In other words, rather than adding new skills to our repertoire, we perfect our expertise at skills we already possess.
Use Expertise to Your Advantage
Depending on where you’re at in the creative journey, taking advantage of creative expertise is an important part of improving as artists. If you have advanced to expert level in your craft, you can rejuvenate your personal creativity by sharing your knowledge with others. Similarly, if you are a novice, an expert in your craft can open your eyes to advanced techniques and methods that will increase your capacity to create.
Connect with Others
Finding an expert to learn from or a novice to teach can at first seem a daunting task. However, many universities provide community classes that facilitate these kinds of connections. Your local library is also a great place to check. Blogs and Twitter are also great ways to connect with experts in your craft. Take some time this week to explore these resources. Perhaps you’ll discover a to benefit from artistic expertise and get your creative groove on.
