This Week: Implement an Idea Quota

Have you ever felt limited by your ideas for tackling a new project? There seems to be just one approach, or maybe two, and you just know they can’t be your only options. Consider taking five days and implementing an idea quota.

(By the way, inspiration for this tip comes directly from Thinkertoys, by Michael Michalko. It’s thick reading/working through, but I highly recommend it!)

Building Momentum

Working out your first few ideas may be challenging, but as you take a few minutes each day, you’ll notice that the ideas begin to flow more easily and more freely. You’ll begin to experience momentum as you focus on developing new solutions and ideas for your project. At the end of the five-day exercise, you’ll have twenty-five ideas for your project. Some of them will be top-notch, and some you’ll toss out in the first round of review. However, you’ll have a starting place and the momentum to build out a stellar solution for your project.

Progress

I tried this tip out myself last week because I have been feeling limited in ideas for new blog posts lately. To maximize and record my efforts, I combined mind-mapping software with the idea quota technique. So far, it’s working great for me. In fact, I have mapped out six months of ideas for this category alone, and I’m excited about the prospects for the series I am working on. Let me know how this method works for you!
