How to Get Your Creative Groove On is an original series by Perch. This week we discuss how to let your best ideas develop and rise to the top.
Part 3: Incubate
So now you’ve identified a problem, and you’ve begun to generate some ideas. Now what? How do you sort through the mountain of potential solutions to zero on your very best, very brightest, most brilliant ideas?
Incubate. After brainstorming, the next step of the creative process involves allowing time for your creativity to simmer. The best way to allow your ideas to “incubate” and fully develop is to step away from the project and do something mundane. For some, this means folding laundry, doing the dishes, going for a job, or even filing expense reports – anything that complete allows the mind to step away from the creative problem and focus on mundane task.
The beauty of the incubation period is that when you are focusing on a mundane task, your brain is working in the background on a brilliant solution to your creative problem.
The fourth step of the creative process occurs at the end of the incubation period. After a period of time, an “ah-hah” moment of insight occurs. Catch up with us next week to find out what to do when you have an ah-hah moment and how to take your idea to the next level.
