This Week: Use a Creative Brief

Great design taps into a product or company’s story and helps position the organization in a way that accurately communicates their services and goals. In marketing, design is tasked with the greater mandate of crossing the gap to create an emotional connection between product/service and consumer.
Telling a story and creating that emotional connection is the result of great insight and great planning. A creative brief or design brief is the first step in creating the framework of any design piece.

Manuel Sez recently authored a blog post titled “Measuring and Compensating Design” for Fast Company’s blog The Power of Design:

“A successfully designed product or service meets and surpasses customer expectations, connecting with them at both the rational and emotional levels. The design is only as good as the design brief that originated it, and a design brief is only as good as the insight that helped create it.”

This week’s tip is to develop and utilize such a creative brief, and a great sample is available from HOW Design. A great site for more information about creating a brief as well as a downloadable template is NancySchwartz.com

Please comment with your own tips for the benefits of a creative brief, tips in creating one, or where to download a template. We’d love to hear from you and learn from your experience!
